LISTEN: Bear's Den - 'Christmas, Hopefully' EP

In a flash, the new (festive) Bear's Den EP is here! While the taster, title track Christmas, Hopefully, was a little upbeat, these two tracks will wrench your heart out in the way that only BD, and Davie's songwriting and vocal delivery can do. Weeping at 1am when I realised this had been released and took a first listen? Me? Never. Berlin pt II is a direct sequel to fan favourite Berlin, a festive release back in 2016, while Favourite Patient is written about Davie's fiancée, as he explains below...

"I wrote this song about my fiancée, she's a junior doctor. The last couple of years her training has involved working everywhere from A&E to Psychiatry Wards. I wrote this song one night after she told me that her favourite patient she'd been looking after for a while had passed away while at work that day. How it affected her, really got me thinking about the emotional toll that doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals all go through every day, how crucially important they are and how this year has highlighted how much we rely on them. Given that the NHS is criminally underfunded by this Conservative Government - we as a band wanted to show our solidarity, gratitude and support especially with the cases rising going into the Winter months. All proceeds from pre-orders of the EP will be going to the fantastic NHS Charities Together who are helping to support NHS staff and volunteers during the Covid-19 Crisis."

They've also released a limited run of EP bundles, with a potato-stamped copy of the EP, a hoodie designed by Studio Juice and a limited edition scarf made in collaboration with UK fashion brand Gresham Blake. They hope to raise over £10,000 for NHS Charities Together from the profits of the bundle sales.

LISTEN: Christof van der Ven - 'Reworks' EP

There seems to be a little trend for reworked or reimagined tracks at the moment (at least, among artists I listen to) and I am here for it as long as tracks I love keep on getting new leases of life. Christof van der Ven has just shared his new EP, entitled Reworks, which features four tracks from across his musical career so far, stripped back and set to piano. The EP was recorded over lockdown in Christof's flat, and mixed by Scott Humphries. Add in some vocals from Camilla Staveley-Taylor (The Staves) and Jed Parsons, string arrangements from Rob & Verity Simmons, and synth wizardly from very clever human Marcus Hamblett (of far too many cool bands to list) and you have something genuinely really special.

Already released in the world were gorgeous versions of You Left It Too Long and Coat. Saving the best until last, arguably, we now have new versions of Big Men At Heart, one of my favourite tunes of Christof's taken from last year's Beneath the Ordinary Load EP and the absolute treat for the ears, first album title track Empty Handed. On first listen to this a few weeks ago, the duet with Camilla gave me actual shivers. Those harmonies. Yes. (Did I mention The Staves are bringing out a new record and I'm really really excited for it?!)

LISTEN: Rosie Shaw - 'Sometime Soon' EP

With recent posts on my musical loves BE GOOD and Low Island (who are both absolutely smashing it) I'm really embracing the Oxford scene on the blog currently. It's always felt a bit like the blog belongs to Oxford and that it has a bit of an affinity to homegrown talent, even if I am living 90 miles away now...

The desire to share brilliant music from the city isn't stopping anytime soon, and I'm really excited for you all to hear Oxford born singer-songwriter Rosie Shaw. Her debut EP Sometime Soon was released last week, with previous singles Temporary Love and Summer Doesn't Feel The Same alongside two new songs. The title track is a highlight for me, a stripped back acoustic which packs an emotional punch.

I'm not really one for a 'if you like this...' comparison often, but this is certainly one for fans of the likes of Phoebe BridgersBrooke Bentham and Maggie Rogers. A varied set of tracks offer a stunning showcase of Rosie's vocals and songwriting. It feels inherently sad, but simultaneously like a warm musical hug... I can't wait to hear more!

LISTEN: T Truman - 'Born To Be Right' EP

It's finally here! Born To Be Right, the debut EP from T Truman, the solo project of The Vaccines keys player & half of Halloweens, the all-kinds-of-talented Timothy Lanham. The EP follows singles Holiday (a certified bop) and Rock 'n' Roll and was co-written and co-produced by Timothy's friend and long-term collaborator Geoff Roberts. It's genius. Cleverly playful songwriting sits across tunes mixing influences of modern indie and 70s rock, where the piano headlines, front and centre. Born To Be Right is a highlight at the moment, but this is certainly one of my favourite EPs of the year.

Along with the EP release, title track Born To Be Right has an equally brilliant music video to match... from the press release - 'mirrored walls, check. Chequerboard floor, yes sir. Entourage of dancers, naturally. This is T Truman in his natural habitat.' On the new single, T Truman shares "I'm just having a joke about being a know it all and wondering why no one likes my company. Naturally the video needed a disco scene. So my mate and I cleared out a garage in Australia, put on safari suits and begged our friends to come."

LISTEN: Hailaker - 'Holding, Pt.1'

Happy drowning-in-chocolate weekend, folks. I'm slow at posting at the moment but music isn't letting up! The last couple of weeks have seen some of my favourite additions yet to the 2020 playlist, and a few days ago, a very welcome addition came in the form of a surprise Hailaker EP. Holding, Pt. 1 is the first part (of three) of their brand new record, releasing in full over the next few weeks. Cause for celebration!

If the project is new to you, it's the brainchild of Jemima Coulter and Ed Tullett, with a little music help from a bunch of their friends, including Ed's collaborator, Ali Lacey (AKA Ali Lacey). Their self-titled debut album was one of my favourite records of 2019, it's sublime. Sharing news of the new record online, the duo explained that it was written in a cottage in Swanage over a Summer, and recorded at Ali's place in September 2018. Can't wait to hear more, but for now... listen below!

LISTEN: White Tail Falls - 'Fake News' EP

As I write this, I'm still revelling in the wonder of having seen my favourite band live on Friday evening. Nothing quite compares. The Hoosiers took to O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire for their Greatest Hit(s) 'tour'. A triumphant live return to the capital for a band that I've spent over a decade adoring, a really special evening. It's a delight to share that the frontman Irwin Sparkes has a solo project, White Tail Falls - you may just about have spotted me raving about it, a little bit.

With the debut album Age of Entitlement due for release on Physical Education Records on 29th May, he's just released his debut EP, Fake News. The title track is the third to be taken from the album, sitting alongside a Karl Zine remix of Rome's Already Fallen, and acoustic versions of The Other Kind of Guy and Body Weight on this EP. All as yet unheard tracks from the project, so a genuinely exciting release. The lyrics throughout the project are honest and vulnerable, while their delivery is tender - trying not to weep my way through Body Weight.

Talking about the title track, Irwin explains that it "was written about four years ago and was inspired by the shock and awe at how people draw their conclusions; betting the farm on such little evidence. All the while I'm reminded of how cripplingly indecisive I can be."

White Tail Falls head out on a UK headline tour through March and April, dates below & tickets here. Join me in London?

20th March: The Poetry Club, Glasgow
21st: Royal Park Cellars, Leeds
26th: St Pancras Old Church, London
27th: The Hope & Ruin, Brighton
2nd: Night People, Manchester

LISTEN: Easy Life - 'Junk Food'

Unless you've been hiding somewhere without access to new music for a couple of years, you'll have surely come across Leicester five-piece Easy Life. Releasing big tune after big tune from the get-go they've been getting the (deserved) attention of all sorts of tastemakers, performing to a packed out tend at last year's Glastonbury, appearing on Later... with Jools Holland and most recently narrowly missing out on the BBC Music Sound of 2020 accolade to Celeste. They're kicking off 2020 with your new favourite mixtape, Junk Food. It's seriously really really brilliant - acquaint yourself below.

When I took my first listen to the mixtape on Friday I had an instant favourite from the previously unheard tracks. Having stalked their social media a little bit since, it's become clear that the track has actually been released since November (my bad) BUT I'm still adoring it. Sangria features Arlo Parks, who I've been seeing on lots of 2020 lists (she was nominated in the BBC Music Sound of 2020 alongside the band) and have been meaning to check out. Arlo and frontman Murray's vocals blend together beautifully on this one and I'm loving the simple video for the track. I loved the track so much that it went straight on my 2020 playlist alongside Gengahr, White Tail Falls and more on Friday...

LISTEN: Everything Everything - 'Live with The No.6 Orchestra' EP

With their superb latest album A Fever Dream released back in August 2017, Everything Everything have been teasing us a new record via a series of studio photos on Instagram for the past few weeks. I absolutely can't wait to hear what they've been working on, but consider my huge need for new music from the band met - for the moment - with a stunning stripped back EP that they've recently shared online. Featuring rarely performed tracks from across their catalogue, the EP was recorded live in Portmerion at Festival No.6 in September 2018, a special collaboration with arranger and composer Joe Duddell and the No.6 Ensemble. Alongside the rarer tunes, the EP finishes up with one of my favourite songs the band have released, No Reptiles, taken from the record Get To Heaven. It's basically a big old stunner and you should all listen pronto.

You can listen to the Live with The No.6 Orchestra EP and download (for free or as much as you want to pay) via Bandcamp here.

LISTEN: Bear's Den - 'Only Son of the Falling Snow' EP

Having kicked off the year with an early stream of the third Bear's Den studio album for a review, over two months before it was released into the wild, it seems only right to be finishing up the year with an early stream of their brand new EP. Only Son of the Falling Snow is released TODAY (listen here) and you can find out for yourselves the beauty that I've been keeping under wraps for a few weeks - I'm really excited for everybody to hear it. It's short but sweet at only three tracks, but holds a lot of seasonal goodness in those 12 minutes. Arriving several months after So That You Might Hear Me, the EP afforded the band the opportunity to work on new music between records, and to give fans an early Christmas present. Much appreciated!

As the band I've seen most this year, and with a show coming up in a London church next week, they've really had an impact on my year. The album stream I had earlier in the year genuinely helped me get through a rough time when I lost my job, and while I loved having the record to myself for a while, it's been incredible to see through gigs, social media posts and the Facebook group they've set up for fans, just how much the album and the band's music in general means to others too. They're a really special band and this EP is just the tip of the iceberg. If Bear's Den are a new name to you, there is so much for you to explore - some of my favourites are Hiding Bottles, Magdalene and Emeralds.

Discussing the new EP, the band's frontman Davie explains that "we wanted to make an EP that felt intimate, nostalgic and united by the theme of Winter. It was a chance between albums for us to work on and explore something more musically sparse and lyrically reflective, working with our longtime friend, collaborator, and producer Ian Grimble. The EP is a collection of songs united by a sense of what Winter means to us. In all its beauty, sadness, stillness and its ability to transform and bring things back to life.”

LISTEN: Flyte - 'White Roses' EP

It's hard not to feel completely at peace as you settle down with the new EP from Flyte - White Roses is 11 minutes of pure bliss from the trio. With their incredibly tight harmonies and honest songwriting fans often draw comparisons to the likes of (and this is kind of huge) The Beatles (yep, them) and Simon & Garfunkel - deservedly so, I reckon. If you caught my recent interview with the band then it won't be much of a surprise to hear that I adore them and their music and I'm really excited that the new EP is out in the world. It's hard to pick a favourite but as the track which launched their return, I'm still really loving the title track White Roses, with the vocal backing of none other than The Staves. How to improve on one group with beautiful harmonies? Combine them with another, of course.

Frontman Will Taylor describes that for the new EP the band have "stepped into a much starker, more direct place emotionally [...] Our last album told other people's stories, where we were too afraid to look at ourselves. The songs on this EP seem to have predicted our futures - or it may be that things are already happening to us that we're not yet conscious of, and the music gets there way before we do. The song 'Sometimes' is the first track recorded since Sam left the band, and although it was written before he left, it is clearly about him and his reasons for going. The current album we're finishing is so much like that, it's incredibly confessional - so what better warm up than the EP."

If you happen to be in America (hi!) Flyte are currently on tour with the equally magic Jade Bird across the US through to the start of November, after which they're heading home for a sold out Village Underground (London) show on November 11th.

LISTEN: BE GOOD - 'God Of Nowhere' EP

I really really really love this band. Oxford quartet BE GOOD have today shared their God Of Nowhere EP. As silky smooth as ever in the lyrics, vocals and sounds, the EP features brand new track Cape Of Night alongside five (ace) previously released tracks from the last couple of years, bringing together their best work so far (all of it?) into a gorgeous release. A favourite for me has to be It's Cool But It Ain't You - I adore that song.

The opening track of the EP, its centre piece is the band's debut track Not Waking Up, originally released just over two years ago. The track has been given a new video featuring band members Ash Cooke (vocals, guitar), Charlie Clarke (drums), James Cunning (synths) and Patrick Burley (bass).

Talking of the track, Ash describes it as being "about the time I woke up on New Year's Day covered in soot because I'd slept in a fireplace at a house party - the prick who was having the party wouldn't let me sleep anywhere else. Crawling out of the fireplace the next day felt strangely like a rebirth [...] in the end the track ended up touching on themes of disconnection and renewal, but you can really just take it as a groggy party anthem for the sleep-deprived."

LISTEN: Bess Atwell - 'Big Blue'

A quick post this evening to share that I am in awe of just how gorgeous Bess Atwell's new EP Big Blue is. Recorded during four days on a boat on the Thames, the EP was produced by Giles Barrett (Johnny Flynn, Marika Hackman). Following her debut album Hold Your Mind, released back in 2016, the new EP joins her love of folk music with indie rock influences from the like of The National, Fleet Foxes, Lucy Dacus and Soccer Mommy.

Talking about the EP, Bess explains that it "explores conflicting themes on identity, romanticism and reality. I have an amazing full-time band now who worked on these songs with me outside of the studio and so, when the time came to record, we just went into the studio and essentially played the songs."

With a few festival appearances on the way, Bess plays a headline tour this October. Full dates and tickets here.

7th October: Bodega, Nottingham
8th October: Broadcast, Glasgow
10th October: Omeara, London
11th October: Soup Kitchen, Manchester
12th October: Louisiana, Bristol
13th October: Hope and Ruin, Brighton

LISTEN: Dizzy - 'Twist'

It's been just over a year since I was first introduced to Dizzy. A friend encouraged me to go along to their set at The Great Escape festival - I knew nothing about them, what sort of music it was, just the name, but I went along and absolutely loved it. Their debut album Baby Teeth was released a few months later and quickly became one of my favourite albums of the year. Working at HMV at the time, I loved playing it in store and getting some colleagues to fall for the record as much as I had. The band is made up of brothers Charlie, Alex and Mackenzie Spencer and their neighbour Katie Munshaw who have been making music together through high school - there is something incredibly endearing and loveable about the group. The critics agree - they received the Juno Award for Best Alternative Album back in Canada. I'm really excited to hear that they're back, with new single Twist being the lead track from an upcoming EP due later this Summer via Communion Records.

Talking in a mini documentary video about the new track which you can check out below, Katie describes that the album had been written straight out of high school, meaning that there was quite a length between writing the tracks and when they were released and audiences were able to connect with them. With new tracks on the way which were written in the past few months, the band are clearly raring to release them. Katie explains that while "Baby Teeth was written about bedrooms, parking lots, restaurants and movie theatres, the new stuff is coming from a well of travelling and touring. Twist is really about missing someone so badly that you see them places and get really excited, and then realise it's not them. It's about the hold someone can have over you even after they've left your life."

They've just finished up their first headline tour back home but fear not, they're coming to England very soon with a few shows - not to be missed! Tickets here.

29th May: Rough Trade, Bristol
31st May: The Eagle Inn, Manchester
1st June: All Points East x Gentlemen of the Road, London
2nd June: Notting Hill Arts Club, London

LISTEN: Pale Moon - 'Dust Of Days'

Better late than never with this one I think! I'm finally getting around to sharing Dust of Days, the recently released EP from Icelandic duo Pale Moon. The band is Árni (who, among other bands, worked with Of Monsters and Men on their debut album) and Natasha, a singer-songwriter originally from Russia. First up - as I've said before, it's kind of nuts that a band from Iceland found the blog and want me to write about their music... the power of the internet!

While Árni declares "I just want to make music and nothing else" and he has been playing in bands for much of his life, Natasha let music take a back seat and headed to Barcelona to study fashion. The duo met in Barcelona, deciding on a month long trip to Mexico to record some demos of Natasha's tracks. The three tracks that make up the EP explore different sounds and themes, coming together to create a really strong first release. Lead track Exile proves its worth as single material, being the punchiest of the three with stand-out harmonious choral sections. Once they've pulled you in with the  more rock-y opener, Waiting for the sun and Everything Is Alright bring some more psychedelic vibes to the table, sounding somewhere along the lines of Tempesst and Geowulf. Check the EP out for yourself below!

LISTEN: Rhys Lewis - 'In Between Minds'

For a couple of years now I've been in a near constant state of admiration for singer-songwriter Rhys Lewis. Shortly after discovering his music I passed up the opportunity to see him playing a hometown show in Oxford in favour of being sensible and writing an essay - a foolish mistake! With a gift for storytelling he consistently bares all in his tracks, which are often explorations of his own experiences (usually those of the romantic kind) - they're relatable and mirror thoughts and experiences that a lot of us have. His honesty is endearing and has earned him a really faithful group of fans consistently selling out his shows, as well as support from the likes of BBC Introducing

Almost a year after he released the Bad Timing EP Rhys is back with In Between Minds. It's a gorgeous collection of tracks, featuring recent singles Hold on to HappinessBetter Than Today and End Like This alongside new tracks Lonely As Love and Things You Can't Change. You can and most definitely should check it out here - the closing track is above, it's a really heartwarming number centring around the premise that "I love you for you babe, for all the things you can't change."

Talking about the EP, Rhys explains "We're living in a weird time where we're all anxious. Everyone has their own thought and fears, but it's probably the same thing unifying them, and even though that divides us it should unite us and bring us together. Each track on the EP has helped me distill and better understand some of the heavier emotions and anxieties that had been sitting at the back of my mind for the best part of a year [...] writing songs has become a way for me to draw a line in the sand and be at peace with things whenever things get confused in my own head."

If you missed Rhys' London headline show last night, you can catch him at Bushstock Festival in June alongside a wonderful line-up!

WATCH: Public Service Broadcasting - 'White Star Liner'

Back in May, Public Service Broadcasting performed on the Titanic Slipways in Belfast for BBC Radio 6 Music's 'Biggest Weekend' festival. For the show, the band were commissioned to create tracks surrounding the theme of the Titanic, which frontman J. Willgoose, Esq. described as "our attempt to pay tribute to the people that built her here in Belfast, the spirit of optimism of the age that she represented and the 1503 people who died when she sank at sea." You can watch the four tracks being debuted at the show here. They're finally releasing the tracks as an EP next Friday (26th), and have released a video for the title track White Star Liner which you can (and should!) watch below.

I can't wait to see the band perform at London's iconic Royal Albert Hall on 1st November (my third show in the venue this year!) - particularly after their show at Eventim Apollo last October was a musical highlight of the year for me. The RAH show sold out pretty quickly, but there are some tickets available (here) if you're willing to sit in the choir seats - a unique view of a beautiful venue!

LISTEN: Tempesst - 'Doomsday' EP

London based psycho-folk quintet Tempesst recently shared their Doomsday EP, following up last year's Adult Wonderland. The release sits somewhere in between a contemporary sound and something of the 60s and 70s, eras of music which hold particular influence for the band. Vocalist Toma Banjanin explains that the band tracked the EP in just four days back in January, and that they "wanted the tracks to sound quite classic, but also [...] with nods to psych, folk, indie and alternative bands around now." The choice to lean towards a faster recording process enabled the band to retain a more organic sound for the release.

I've been really enjoying the already released singles A Little Bit Of Trouble and title track Doomsday, but since the release of the EP, Roller Coaster has become a firm favourite. The idea for the track came from singer Toma during a camping trip with his girlfriend, and put simply, it's everything you want from the band - full of beautiful strings and harmonies, and transporting you straight to a seaside resort.

The band originated in Queensland, Australia, and is made up of twin brothers Toma (vocals, guitars) and Andy Banjanin (drums), alongside Kane Reynolds (keys), Blake Misipeka (bass) and Eric Weber (guitars). They moved across the globe a couple of years ago, and as a collection of tracks, the EP brings to attention the daily anxieties and temptations that come with living in a busy city like London. Opening track A Little Bit Of Trouble nods towards an ill-fated encounter with some locals in a London pub, while the almost MGMT-esque closing track Eric's Dream, penned by the band's guitarist Eric, reflects the anxiety and sleeplessness they found in their new hometown.

Tempesst are heading on a UK tour this month to celebrate the release of the EP, with a show at The Victoria in London on the 27th - check out the other dates and grab tickets for the shows here.

LISTEN: Catgod - 'Heartbeat in My Hand' EP

It's been out for a couple of weeks now, but just in case the latest release from my pals Catgod passed you by, here it is! They're following up 2017 EP Someone Love with their utterly sublime Heartbeat In My Hand EP. The collection of four tracks opens with the title track, instantly showering us in those beautiful vocal harmonies of brother and sister duo Robin and Cat. Recent addition Patrick Bolton, on keys, takes centre stage for a moment in the almost understated opener, which gravitates around the instrument. While the first track lures us in gently, Keep My Promises is it's musical opposite, a much wilder track, lyrically and musically. Flute solos included. The pace is taken down a notch for tearjerker Let Go, before Robin takes over lead vocal responsibilities for closing track Owing You.

As a band that I've been friends with from their early days, I'm incredibly proud of the evolution their sound has taken on. From their beginnings as Roberto y Juan with the Monster Love EP in early 2016, the band became a collective, working with musicians from across the Oxford music scene and beyond to try out different styles, organically becoming Catgod as it is now. Pretty wonderful they are, too.

LISTEN: Premium Leisure - 'Plug The Leads In' EP

It's no great secret that Willie J Healey is one of the best musical exports from Oxford of recent years, and I'm really excited to see that his guitarist Chris Barker has a new band Premium Leisure. With the band (for performances, at least) comprising of the total dream team of Willie J, WJH drummer Mike Monaghan and BE GOOD frontman Ash Cooke there's no surprises that the brand new EP, Plug The Leads In, is a wonderful collection of tunes.

While incredibly fresh, the use of analogue recording techniques and vintage equipment in Chris's Oxfordshire home studio give the EP a fairly tangible 60s psychedelic rock vibe. Opening with the below single Water Pistol, you instantly know that you're onto a good one, but the highlight for me is second track Gold Tunes - check out that instrumental section two minutes into the tune...

Listen to the whole EP on Spotify here. It's being released through Oxford tape label (that's a thing in 2018 - how exciting?!) and you can grab a copy here, or at The Library in Oxford where the band are playing a three show residency, with gigs coming up on the 14th and 21st of June - head to the event for more info here.

LISTEN: Matthew & The Atlas - 'Cali' EP

Matthew & The Atlas's recent EP in a word? Dreamy. The talented ensemble are fronted by Matt Hegarty, whose beautifully smooth vocals are just the tip of the iceberg on this release. Cali has been out in the world for a couple of weeks, and while it's soothing sounds might more closely suit a winter release (I can totally picture listening to the EP next to a fire with a hot chocolate... just me?) it's a stunning collection of tracks, whatever the weather. The single Seventeen is a highlight for me, and I'm crossing everything that I can get to this year's Bushstock in a couple of weeks and catch the band, alongside the likes of Seramic, Peace and Flyte (last few tickets for that are on sale at the moment - grab yours now!)
