WATCH: Jake Whiskin - 'Drive You Home' (feat. Lizzie Reid)

I'm fully in a bit of a sad song phase at the moment, lapping up all of the gorgeous harmonic acoustic music that I can get my ears on. I shared the new one from Lizzie Reid a couple of days ago, mentioning her feature on this... it's too good for me not to share this one too. Jake Whiskin has announced his self-titled debut album with the single Drive You Home. Releasing via Dance To The Radio on 4th November, this is such a stunning taster of the record, which was produced by Lee Smith (Easy Life, Holly Humberstone) and Rob Slater (Yard Act, Crake) at Greenmount Studios, close to where Jake grew up. 

Talking about the new track, Jake shares that it is "a song about a relationship that's on its last legs and plays out over a firework display whilst you internalise how much you've grown apart over the years. I pretty much wrote the whole song around the lyric 'I will drive you out your mind and then I'll drive you home'. It always felt like a duet to me so we got Lizzie Reid on board who is obviously amazing and she just took it to a whole new place."

LISTEN: Lizzie Reid - 'Love Of Her Life'

Well this is all sorts of beautiful, isn't it?! Love Lizzie Reid, and chuffed that she's got a new EP on the way. Releasing via sevenfoursevensix on August 31st, it's called Mooching and I can't wait to give it a listen. Opener Love Of Her Life is a slow-burning delight. Really special. Those guitars are lush, but it's Lizzie's vocals that completely transfix. It's a double Lizzie week too, as she's on the new Jake Whiskin track, Drive You Home, which is just as brill. 

On Love Of Her Life, Lizzie shares: "At the time I wrote the song, I felt like I was looking at heartbreak from a new and less naive perspective. But now I have a bit of distance on it, I can see I was still carrying a lot of baggage. For example, when I say 'I don't mind', I see now that I clearly do mind - but I have a different way of confronting my emotions."

LISTEN: Lizzie Reid - 'Bible'

Happy Wondrous Place day, folks... Paddy from Stay Loose has made the exciting move to set up his own PR agency which launches today!!! I'm excited for him, and to see what brilliant music he continues to share with us all. That rambling is mostly to say that I'm sharing one of Paddy's artists today, the brilliant Lizzie Reid, who has shared her first new material since the Cubicle EP of last year. The EP, which explored the deterioration of Lizzie's first same-sex relationship, saw her gaining much deserved love from press, radio and streaming, and led to her supporting Arlo Parks on a couple of tour dates in Glasgow and Edinburgh. I love it!

On Bible, for which Lizzie worked with her regular collaborator and producer Oli Barton-Wood, she shares: "Bible is about being nervous about falling in love again. I was feeling something, and that scared me. I wanted to get things right this time, be important to someone, and not to bring my anxieties into the picture. Becoming involved with someone tends to bring up things within yourself. It holds a mirror up and forces me to look at myself through someone else's eyes."

LISTEN: Lizzie Reid - 'Cubicle' EP

I should almost certainly be asleep but instead I'm trying to write a post ready to share in the morning. Sometimes I've got a plan, sometimes I stare into my list of ideas and pick out something that I really want to share at the time - today it's the latter, as I'm desperate to share this beautiful collection of tracks, the new EP from Lizzie Reid, Cubicle. Seven tracks and just over twenty minutes of pure poetry and musical heaven await you. 

Released via Seven Four Seven Six, this is Lizzie's debut EP (I'm stunned by that fact!) and it was recorded with Oli Barton-Wood in Lizzie's home in Glasgow just before the first lockdown. Turning something difficult into a beautiful piece of work, the EP is a reflection of a summer in which Lizzie's first same-sex relationship came to an end. A tough situation to deal with, but one through which she grew more comfortable within her self and her sexuality. Listen to current single Company Car below...

On the EP, Lizzie shares: "I recorded this at my home in Glasgow, where most of the songs were written. It's about a time when I wasn't feeling my best but writing and recording this has helped me to process that time in my life and a real weight has been lifted. I'm so pleased to finally be releasing this record and thankful for everyone who has helped make it happen."

LISTEN: Lizzie Reid - 'Been Thinking About You'

Happy Thursday, folks! Feeling in a bit of a rut (aren't we all?) while things around me and further afield are all so chaotic, so apologies for not posting so much at the moment. Trying my best to fall back into the rhythm. It'll happen. Searching through my submissions, a favourite showed up in the form of the latest track from Glaswegian songwriter Lizzie Reid. Her recent singles brought me some gorgeously delicate yet self-assured Laura Marling-esque vibes towards the end of 2020, and I'm loving this extra taste of her upcoming debut EP Cubicle, which is due out on February 10th via Seven Four Seven Six. 

While the previous tracks were mostly Lizzie and her guitar (the EP was recorded entirely in her house with producer Oli Barton-Wood, just before the first lockdown kicked in back in March last year) this new track is a little more raucous, and it's more collaborative, too. The guitar-led outro harks back to her past life playing in bands across Glasgow - as many as seven at once at one point!

On the track, she shares: "this is almost an appreciation song for a friend of mine. He was such a support for me at a time I wasn't feeling my best. I was going through quite a confusing time and felt guilty that I couldn't support him in the same way he supported me."

EP NEWS: Lizzie Reid - 'Cubicle'

About a month after sharing her last single Seamless (which has been circulating through my headphones and my heart ever since) I'm delighted to share news from Lizzie Reid. She's just announced her debut EP Cubicle, set for release via 7476 on January 22nd, with new single Always Else. It's gorgeous. If there's a Laura Marling esque gap in your life/speakers, the intimacy and beauty of Lizzie's music, touching on themes of love, loss and heartbreak, can certainly fill it and then some. 

Speaking about the new track Lizzie explains that "this song is about insecurity. Feeling like you're not quite up to it. It's about obsessing with the idea of perfection and worth - whether that be about your physical appearance, your personality or social identity."

Managing to squeeze in the recording before lockdown hit, Lizzie created the EP with producer Oli Barton-Wood at her Glasgow home back in March. He travelled to Scotland with a case of recording equipment and they finished the EP just in time. Of the collection of tracks, Lizzie shares that "it is really important to me that I got to make something with people I care about and that we created something amazing and genuine."

LISTEN: Lizzie Reid - 'Seamless'

"your head is in the sand while I'm trying to keep mine above water. you still stay on land while I'm drowning out here in the water..."

Without picking favourites, there are certain publicists and PR companies who consistently send through brilliant new releases, and in whose hands (and emails) I feel pretty safe. For years now, one of these has most definitely been Stay Loose. They've introduced me to the likes of Novo Amor, Siv Jakobsen and Leif Vollebekk, as well as sending across early listens of music from firm favourites. An email from Paddy is genuinely a cause for celebration in my inbox - something which I'll either rush towards or try my best to save until last, a reward for wading through the inbox in its entirety. I was delighted this week to find this new track from Glaswegian singer-songwriter Lizzie Reid.

A new name for me, another sure sign that I might like what I heard here came in the first lines of the email - Lizzie has recently signed to Seven Four Seven Six, a label that has Matilda Mann and Matt Maltese on its roster. Seamless is exactly that - exposed vocals pair with strings (and we know that I love a string section) to highlight Lizzie's emotive songwriting. And if you try hard enough, you can hear her cat at the end of the track, I think. I hope they're getting royalties.
