Happy International Women's Day, folks! Celebrating with some of my favourite women in music on the girls allowed playlist and by sharing this gorgeous track from Sunflower Thieves. In the words of The Staves (ish) they're good good women indeed. Lichtenberg Figures is taken from their upcoming EP - if like me, you're unsure what those are, you'll know them but perhaps not by name... they're the branch-like scars or patterns which form on the human body or the ground after a lightning strike.) A symbol for finding beauty and strength through vulnerability. The video (below) was directed by Olivia Sofia Ferrara and is brill, as ever... as of course is the track.
On the track, the duo share: "we were fascinated by Lichtenberg figures because of how they can look beautiful whilst coming from something so intensely dangerous and powerful as lightning. The song is about going through something traumatic and coming out the other side stronger, proving to yourself and others that you're unbeatable."Tuesday, 8 March 2022

WATCH: Matilda Mann - 'Bloom'
"I met you too soon, for anything to bloom."
As I've said time and time again, I am in love with Matilda Mann and her gorgeous music. It's been a treat to watch her going from strength to strength over the past year - and hearing recent single Doomsday on BBC Radio 1 a few days back was a delight. Onto the next, though... she's just shared Bloom, taken from forthcoming EP Sonder. The track arrives with a video from documentary photographer and director Aria Shahrokhshahi.
On the track, Matilda shares: "Bloom is about meeting someone too soon. Sometimes you need a little more time, to figure out what you want and how to be alone, so that you don't give too much of yourself away to someone else. Sometimes it can just be a phase, or you feel like you made a mistake. But I think, as time goes on, things like that become more clear it was the right decision."

LISTEN: Matilda Mann - 'My Point Of You'
You always know you're in for a treat when Matilda Mann graces us with a new track, and My Point Of You is no exception to the rule. A track about returning to yourself after a breakup, the faster delivery on this one makes it all the more enchanting. A tiny two minute track, you'll find yourself skipping back to the beginning to get just a couple more minutes with Matilda's completely hypnotic vocals.
On the track Matilda shares: "I wrote My Point Of You about watching a friend of mine start doing all the things she loves doing again, after being with someone who slowly changed her. Growing back into yourself, and knowing you don't need that person to make you happy, is the best part of a breakup. You're coming back, they're not."

LISTEN: Matilda Mann - ‘Doomsday'
What a joy to have the beautiful sound of Matilda Mann back with a new tune last week. Despite the name, Doomsday is in fact a soothing tune, full of love and hope. Completely enchanting as ever. It's Matilda's first release since her 2020 EP Because I Wanted You To Know and was written during lockdown, a track celebrating the small things that make life good, and the importance of holding onto those in the darker times.
On the track she shares: “Doomsday was written in December in lockdown. During that time, we really had to cling onto the small things in life, and sometimes it just felt like it was never going to get better. So Doomsday was written to help people feel, that during the worst times, things are going to get better. We have each other and the small things that make life good.”

LISTEN: Matilda Mann - 'Japan'
New Matilda Mann is always a treat, right? She's one of the best discoveries of the year in my opinion, and has a brand new EP arriving next Friday (20th.) Recent singles As It Is, Robbed and Happy Anniversary, Stranger are joined by brand new track Japan. It's short but most certainly sweet, lyrically romanticising a break-up and longing for escapism. Aren't we all?!
Talking on the new track, Matilda shares "over lockdown I binge-watched a TV show called 'Gossip Girl'. (It's basically about very rich teenagers living in NYC) and whenever they were heartbroken, they would always fly off to Paris or do something extravagant and I thought, if I was 17 and heartbroken (and rich), I'd fly to Japan to cry and distract myself til I got over them."

WATCH: Matilda Mann - 'Happy Anniversary, Stranger'
Time for some new Matilda Mann, and by far the cutest thing that I found in my submissions inbox last week. Happy Anniversary, Stranger is the third track to be taken from Matilda's upcoming Because I Wanted You To Know EP, due for release later in the year. Co-written by Matt Maltese, it's a really sweet track about fancying for a stranger who you see regularly, but never talk to - in this case, on a bus. While you're here - there's a new video of Matilda performing Robbed by the Thames here. Lovely!
About the track, Matilda said "I used to get the bus to school every day and there would always be this guy who I'd see every morning. We never spoke but I always thought it such a cute love story - to have a crush on someone from a distance and eventually getting the courage to say hello. The 266 to Hammersmith was the bus I got to school every day, so I've always wanted to work it into a song."
