LISTEN: Winnie Raeder - ‘A Quiet Way'

"How is it that you remind me, of every memory I have?

A treat for your Thursday afternoon... Winnie Raeder shared a gorgeous new track yesterday. A Quiet Way is her first release since Baby in February, and the second to be self-produced. With a couple of years worth of singles and an EP under her belt, the London based, Denmark-born artist seems to carry with her a confidence and skill that feels as if she's been doing this for far longer. She's something special, that's for sure.

Winnie describes that the new track is "really about the admiration and gratitude you can have for someone that's been a part of your life at some point. It's paying your respects to someone you hold a great amount of love for, without projecting any desires onto them. I guess it really came from the thought that some people will just have an everlasting impact on us somehow, even when they're not actively a part of our lives anymore. And I think that's lovely. It's connection without being connected somehow."

LISTEN: Winnie Raeder - 'BABY'

Winnie Raeder was one of my favourite finds of last year - her voice is incredible and she arrived onto the scene with her stunning debut Don't You Dare and the From Here EP, before selling out her first headline shows and supporting Charlie Cunningham and Tamino on tour. Self-producing for the first time, new cut BABY is a gorgeous first release of the year. Stunning and enthralling vocals sit atop a combination of piano and subtle electronics.

Talking about the track, Winnie explains that "BABY is about wanting to clean your apartment because you know its not good for you to live amidst mess and disarray, but at the same time, there's a voice in the back of your head that reminds you that's how you've always lived and what you know. Throwing away some of that garbage would mean having to get rid of some of the clutter you've learned to love. It's basically that, but instead of your apartment, it refers to you mind. I've always been interested in [...] what makes us tick and behave the way that we do."

On producing the track herself, Winnie comments that "there are some brilliant female producers making music at the moment, but there aren't enough and that's partly because women aren't encouraged at a young age to explore production. A lot of female producers tend to feel a sense of imposter syndrome when they write and produce their own music and that has to change. [...] I've always paid a lot of attention when I've been in with other producers because I knew that one day I wanted to try and do it myself, so that's definitely helped the process."

If you'd like to catch Winnie live (why wouldn't you!) she's just been announced for this year's Great Escape Festival and is playing the upcoming BBC Music Introducing showcase at The Lexington alongside Plested and Eloise this Thursday, 5th March.

LISTEN: Winnie Raeder - 'She'

One of my favourite discoveries of the year, Winnie Raeder shared her debut track Don't You Dare back in Spring. The track became the opener of her From Here EP which was released in June - and Winnie is back with gorgeous new track She. It's hard to believe that the tracks she has released are still in single figures... there's a level of accomplishment and confidence which comes through the track, alongside vulnerable and exposed vocals.

A song that was written with her friends Josh Record and Jacob Attwooll, Winnie explains that "we started playing around with some chords and started with the title 'She' before we had written any of the rest of the lyrics. It felt really interesting to pair a traditional folk sound with a song written for and sung by a woman. We kept the language poetic and romantic and the song almost wrote itself."

The track arrives amidst a UK support tour with a big favourite of mine, Charlie Cunningham. I can only imagine how sublime those shows will be! After a run of shows in the UK for the next week or so, she's also supporting Tamino (an equally sublime artist) in Antwerp, Berlin and London. In between shows she's also playing her third London headline of the year (following two sold out shows in 2019) at Courtyard Theatre on 27th November. Tickets for that one are here.

LISTEN: Winnie Raeder - 'I Wear A Ghost'

Fresh from releasing her utterly mesmerising debut single Don't You Dare a few weeks back, Winnie Raeder is back. I Wear A Ghost, a co-write with RØMANS, is her second single and it's displaying those gorgeously heartbreaking vocals.

Talking about the process of creating the track, Winnie explains that "you have baggage from previous times in your life that will manifest today, in the present, because where you have been in your life makes you. It shapes you." Talking about co-writing the new track with RØMANS, she goes on to say "it felt like it was already written. We had a conversation and the song just happened so naturally. We were just two people talking about life, talking about how things feel and how it feels to be human."

As well as a slot of the upcoming Bushstock Festival on 15th June, Winnie plays her first, sold out, headline show at St Pancras Old Church on 3rd June.

LISTEN: Winnie Raeder - 'Don't You Dare'

Following on from yesterday's post on the recent Lucy Rose record, here is another artist with a stripped back track and some powerfully intimate vocals. Don't You Dare is the recent debut single from 23 year old London-based (but Denmark born and raised) singer-songwriter Winnie Raeder. With the first single in the bag, it's looking to be an exciting year, with her first headline show at the gorgeous St Pancras Old Church lined up for 3rd June (tickets) and a slot at Bushstock Festival (who just announced a ton of line-up additions including the likes of Matt Corby and Banfi) booked in for 15th June!

Talking about the track, Winnie explains that "its about someone leaving you and the denial you feel when it happens - the utter desperation you feel at not wanting to accept that person is leaving or has gone forever. For the production it was a very conscious choice to make it as simple as possible. Thinking of the story and what's being said, the overall sense is one of numbing. When you feel numbed, it feels like everything stops. Silence. Space. I wanted to create that feeling sonically."
