LISTEN: Spector - 'Simplicity'

I really really love Spector. I think I see them as some sort of modern day indie heroes - a very deserved title. Debut album Enjoy It While It Lasts is somehow seven years old this year, featuring such absolute tunes as Chevy Thunder, Celestine and Friday Night, Don't Ever Let It End. OK, let's be honest: the entire album is brilliant. They followed it up with the equally superb Moth Boys in 2015 and last year's Ex-Directory EP. A recent bout of single releases comes ahead of an upcoming EP, with Simplicity the latest track from the band, released just ahead of their current UK tour.

Enigmatic frontman Fred Macpherson explains that the new track is "about getting the opportunity to leave it all behind [...] to walk away from the things that make you unhappy, to care less, make better decisions, treat yourself and others more sensitively, to not engage in petty hierarchies, not look at your life in terms of achievements (or lack of them), to spend more time with your family and people you actually like, be less selfish, less bitter, to give something back. It's about recognising the opportunity to do all those things and not taking it."

Spector are currently in the midst of a UK tour - taking in shows across October and November, finishing up with shows at Oxford's Bullingdon on 12th Nov and London's Oval Space on 13th. Full dates and remaining tickets here.

WATCH: Spector - 'Fine Not Fine'

Spector have released a video for the lead track of their recent Ex-Directory EP, Fine Not Fine. Shot in Taroudant in Morocco it's a beautiful insight into the area, all the more when you find it was shot entirely on an iPhone 7. Typical of the band who brought us the lyric "my battery's 10%, let's generate content" and one of the first 360 session videos I'd seen a couple of years ago. If you dig this new video, check out the rest of the EP here and grab tickets for the upcoming UK tour here.

LISTEN: Spector - 'Fine Not Fine'

Surprise! A new Spector EP was released on Friday, entitled Ex-Directory and featuring recent single Untitled in D and new track Fine Not Fine. The tune is described by the band's Fred Macpherson as "a stream of consciousness inspired by the more self loathing corners of sad twitter" - it's got some pretty striking lyrics ("some of your best friends are tories") and sadder themes ("I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm not fine") masked by their signature upbeat sound. Check out the full EP on Spotify here.

You can catch Spector on the Ex-Directory tour in May - they'll be heading to The Plug in Sheffiled, The Bodega in Nottingham, Thekla in Bristol, Gorilla in Manchester and Scala in London - tickets are available here.

LISTEN: Spector - 'Tenner'

The ever wonderful Spector (with James from Swim Deep filling in for Danny) recorded some tracks at Youtube HQ recently, the first of which was released yesterday. It's a new track, Tenner, with a catchy beat and some superb guitar and bass solos - great to hear new music from them considering their second studio album, Moth Boys, wasn't released that long ago! I first watched the video on my laptop, thinking 360 did just mean that it was shot as a panorama, but... check it out on your mobile devices and you can be in the centre of the performance, turning your phone to look in various directions. I'm slightly blown away by the fact that camera technology allows us to view the performance in this way online!

Watch our for more videos from the session...

LIVE: Spector at O2 Academy Oxford (28/10/15)

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Spector live for the first time, up the road at Oxford's O2 Academy. By way of support they had fun sets from local chaps Orange Vision and Bill Ryder-Jones (previously of The Coral). The band finished up their UK tour tonight in London, in support of their recently released second album, Moth Boys. If you don't know Spector by name, you might know this track, Celestine, from their first album Enjoy It While It Lasts.

With frontman Fred Macpherson only singing during the show (rather than the typical band dynamic of frontman playing guitar), I was blown away by his level of showmanship. He was incredibly energetic and constantly trying to involve the crowd - which, though I suspect not quite their usual pushy crowd (a good point from my perspective of the evening), seemed to be enjoying it as much as I did, and it was virtually impossible not to yell back the lyrics to the band's well known tracks such as Friday Night, Don't Ever Let It End and Chevy Thunder, as well as many of the newer tracks, which Fred encouraged the crowd early on to sing if they knew the words, and if they didn't) including the final track of the night, the opener of the second record, All The Sad Young Men. His interaction with the crowd being a particular highlight of the night, his joking anecdote about the track coincidentally being written about a Wednesday night gig in Oxford in green lighting, moments that remind us that "sadly, we're alive" was pretty amusing.

Meeting Fred after the show briefly, he seemed like a really down to earth, lovely chap, and told me he used to play in a band with King Charles (after I recalled a tweet from a year or so ago about them sending each other their new albums to listen to). I'd recommend going to see them play if they're near you, but sadly the tour is over now, however I'm sure it won't be long until they're out on the road again!

WATCH: Spector - 'Cocktail Party'

Indie rockers Spector released their second studio album, Moth Boys, on Friday. It's the follow up to their brilliant 2012 release Enjoy It While It Lasts - which features tracks Celestine and Chevy Thunder. This is the latest track to be taken from the album, Cocktail Party, the video for which was recorded wholly on bassist Tom's iPhone.

Spector tour across the UK to promote the record in October, with dates in Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Oxford and topped off with a show at London's Heaven, among other cities. Tickets for the run of shows are available on the band's website here.
