LISTEN: THANDII - 'Tides'

With their Serious Town EP due for release on July 5th, Margate duo Thandii have shared the third and final single, Tides. The track has been described as a tribute to climate activist Greta Thunberg with a nod towards her work in raising awareness of climate change. Themes of guilt flow through the lyrics, but it's hard to feel completely out of hope with Jess's silky smooth vocals.

You can pre-save the Serious Town EP here - it's due out July 5th.

LISTEN: Thandii - 'Company'

Thandii are back! Their first release as a duo (following up the likes of Another One and Alkaline when it was a solo project for Jess) Company is the first track to be taken from their forthcoming EP which is due later this year and which the duo wrote, recorded, mixed and produced themselves. With gorgeous synths throughout drawing you in and making it difficult to resist the urge to dance, the track explores the nuances of a failing and monotonous relationship, as Jess asks the rhetorical "Don't you know what I need?"

WATCH: Thandii - 'Another One'

Need warming up? Bathe in the golden hues and seaside vibes of this new video from Margate's Thandii. The release is both visually and sonically stunning, showcasing her psychedelic sound with some strong 70s vibes. Having recently signed to 30th Century Records, the track is Thandii's first output through the label, and a track which she describes as being "written for cruising or travelling, without a place to be." The repetitive, almost hypnotic melody of the track (and by extension, the video) certainly gives off this vibe - we're not particularly getting anywhere, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Thandii describes the track as being about "infatuation or addiction, particularly between people [...] that moment when a person has succumb to the influence of another, and it has a powerful effect on them, but they're completely unaware of it." With this in mind director Tom Dream, Thandii describes, reflected this moment "with a wandering, slightly disorientated, dazed & confused cruise through different situations in day-to-day life."

LISTEN: Thandii - 'Alkaline'

I always feel a little guilty for listening to far fewer female artists than I do male, both in terms of solo musicians and bands. I used to feel like I just preferred listening to music created by men, but think that it is more likely that male artists dominate the genres that I listen to. It's not really clear to me if that is in any way statistically true, or a reflection of the backing given to male artists over their female counterparts in terms of promotion. Considering all of this, and a desire to listen to more female artists, it is always incredibly refreshing to find a female artist creating music that I enjoy.

A perfect example of this is recent record Someone Out There from Rae Morris - upon a couple of listens it quickly became my favourite release of the year so far, and one that I've barely stopped talking about to anyone who will listen. The latest example is the new tune from Margate's dreamy vocalist Thandii, who has shared Alkaline, the second track from her upcoming EP.

The track is slower than it's Summer-y predecessor Another One, emerging from a dreamscape of 70s tunes, combining retro sounds with Thandii's calm, soothing vocals. Writing of the tune, she explains that "lyrically, I was thinking about the push and pull of a volatile relationship and how that could relate to the physical and chemical world. At the time I was in an acid relationship and trying to keep it more neutral. Hence alkaline [...] Musically things get more and more cosmic and spacy towards the end and lyrically I end up trying to cut and run from the relationship, but still end up unresolved, going in circles [...] I wanted it to feel like a cycle you can get lost in, with seemly no resolution."

LISTEN: Thandii - 'Another One'

Summer vibes at the ready for this one! I had the total joy of running the door for a headline Tom Figgins gig last April where Thandii opened the evening with a beautifully dreamy set - I recognised her at the time from singing with the wonderful Seramic a few weeks before, and I've since seen her in live videos for Mr Jukes. She works with some pretty cool artists, but she's stepping out as a soloist with a bold sound, making an "attempt to put a female stamp on an otherwise male-dominated sound."

Filled with dreamy 70s psychedelic vibes, elements of jazz and disco - and a harp - this new tune is intricately layered. The track was produced, written and recorded in Margate, where Thandii relocated from London after a late night bet... she describes it as "a kind of west coast on the east coast [...] Margate has been incredible." You can hear her chatting about the importance of the local scene to her own music in an interview with BBC Music Introducing In Kent's Abbie McCarthy here, when the track was made their record of the week in February!
