WATCH: PD Liddle - 'Uncanny Valley'

It's somehow already over two and a half years since one of my favourite bands, Dry The River, decided to call it a day after two brilliant records. Their music continues to mean a lot and I've kept an eye on and an ear out for the various side projects they're involved in, and perhaps the most exciting is reaching its peak as lead singer Peter Liddle, under the name PD Liddle, has just unveiled another solo track Uncanny Valley and announced that his debut solo record Casual Labour is due out in two weeks time via Xtra Mile Recordings.

The record is a treat for loyal Dry The River fans, filled with those beautifully distinct vocals of Liddle, and featuring guest appearances and contributions from members of DtR including Scott Miller on bass, Patrick Pearson on keys, Will Harvey arranging and performing strings and Matthew Reynolds on guitar. The record itself, produced by Peter Miles (Eliza & The Bear, Lonely The Brave) was completed in just 5 days and written gradually over the years since DtR disbanded, coming together in Liddle's spare time while he turned his attention to a new career and began to study law.

Writing of the record, Peter said that “When I was younger, I thought you wrote about the big events and huge milestones in your life - that you need emotional peaks and troughs to inspire you, but just participating in daily life is much more inspiring for me… The ethos of this record was if it’s really difficult, you’re not doing it right. If you’re having to push hard against something it’s probably not working. It was finding the path of least resistance… It's been a nice journey, discovering that.”

Pre-order Casual Labour here - it's due for release on 13th July.

WATCH: PD Liddle - 'Good' (live)

Being the sensible, retail-working human-being that I currently am, I sadly had to miss PD Liddle's debut solo show last week in London. With a star studded band featuring Peter's Dry The River bandmates Scott and Pat, as well as DtR guitar tech Matt and Banfi drummer Aaron, they charmed the crowd at OMEARA with a mix of tracks old and new. From the snippets of the show that I've seen online (including a breathtaking performance of DtR track History Book unplugged in the crowd) it looked to be a pretty impressive show! Just before the gig, Peter treated us to another new track from his solo repertoire with this acoustic version of Good.

Now to wait around for more live show announcements...

LISTEN: Dry The River - 'Hooves Of Doubt'

Dry The River today released a new EP, Hooves Of Doubt, as a farewell gift to fans, announcing the news that after seven years, several tours and two albums, they're splitting up and focusing on other projects. Having been a fan of the band for a few years now, their music has become somewhat of a favourite of mine and in the three shows I was lucky enough to see the guys play, they showcased their brilliance as a live band, striking the folk-rock balance beautifully.

While its a little bittersweet to listen to the EP knowing that we won't get to hear the tracks live again, it's as stunning as their two albums (though apart from them, my favourite is probably an acoustic version of their debut, Shallow Bed, which they released online a couple of years ago.) Have a listen and if you haven't heard of them before, do check out their albums because they've got a wonderful back catalogue!

ALBUM NEWS: Dry The River announce new record 'Alarms in the Heart'

I haven't posted in what seems like an age, because I've been spending my time revising (or sitting and thinking that I should be revising) for my A2 exams. I finished school for good nearly 2 weeks ago and now seems like a good time to try and get back into posting here more regularly.

What better way to return but with the excellent news that Dry The River last week finally announced news of their new record, Alarms In The Heart which is to be released on 25th August.

The album is available to pre-order in a number of packages, more details of which can be found here. Furthermore, the release of the album will be supported by a tour in October, dates here.

I saw the band on a fairly small tour in June 2013, at the Portland Arms in Cambridge, when they were trying out new material - both the gig and the new tunes were excellent. Not only technically brilliant, the band are highly energetic in their performances - which  came across well even in such an intimate venue. I wholeheartedly recommend that you go and see them - I shall hopefully be at the Oxford show if I end up going to Oxford Brookes uni in September as I hope to!

The news of the record release date was also supported by a new video for the track Gethsemane, taken from the record, one of the tracks which they played at the show last year (video). Have a listen and be sure to pre-order/book tickets etc, hope you like the track!

WATCH: Big Fin - 'More Than Love'

This guy, Big Fin, is honestly one of the best musicians I've started listening to this year. He's currently Dry The River's guitar tech and supported them when I saw them at an intimate show in June, and his set was probably one of the best sets I've listened to. No gimmicks, just him and his guitar. The songs have a great sound both recorded and live - especially if you're into artists such as Dry The River - and the set was just so lovely because everybody was really quiet and respectful, no talking, which is quite rare at gigs, and especially during support slots.

Overall a really great set and I've since bought his Tether EP (which you can listen to/buy here) and absolutely love it. (Well, I can think of worse ways of spending £4 - absolute bargain!)

WATCH: Dry The River - 'Gethsemane'

Clip I got of a new Dry The River song called Gethsemane from their gig at the Portland Arms in Cambridge. This and the rest of the set was wonderful, especially after wanting to see them live for quite a while!

WATCH: Dry The River - 'The Chambers & The Valves'

Lovely video of Dry The River walking around in Barcelona playing their song The Chambers & The Valves. A beautiful, simple, stripped back performance that is representative of their great harmonies.
